Why is it bad to lose 50 pounds real quick?

I can understand gaining 50 pounds quickly would be bad for your health. But why would losing it be? Wouldn't it mean less stress on your body?

  1. It depends how fast....losing it very fast, say within a month, is dangerous....in 3 months it is fairly healthy. Simply put, say you force yourself to lose it in a month. It would deprive you of the nutrients your body needs to maintain yourself...or burn them off and start eating away at your own organs/muscle-fibers to get energy (as what happens in Ketosis, which is why the Atkins Diet, for example, is flawed and the Zone and Subway diets (which provide low-glycemic "good" carbs for energy, rather than almost none), for example, aren't). The only way to lose that much weight really quickly would be to eat essentially nothing and/or (through exercise or heart-overstressing dangerous diet pills or caffeine overdoses) burn many many more calories than you consume. This would actually stress the body as it would be forced to burn a lot of muscle, as well as fat, to create energy to keep you alive. Not only is this unhealthy, it will slow down your metabolism as your body begins, over time, to go into "surivival mode" storing every bit of food it gets as fat (so it can use it as energy later in case you "run out of food"). So when you resume a normal diet, YOU WILL GAIN THE WEIGHT RIGHT BACK AND MAYBE MORE....THIS IS WHY IT IS, LITERALLY, A "DIET ROLLERCOASTER" FOR MANY PEOPLE. One pound of fat is about 2400 calories and a fairly hard one hour workout burns about 700, 1000-1100 if you're in competitive shape IE a marathoner or triathelete. Simply put, losing weight healthily takes time and puts more focus on exercise than starving oneself.
  2. the average you should lose a week should be around 2 pounds, the faster you lose the weight the faster it comes back
  3. Fat stores toxins which are released when you lose weight. Most people that lose weight fast gain it back fast also. Your body needs time to clean out the waste. Either they hurt themselves by working out to much or they set thier body into starvation mode. When your body thinks it is straving it lowers your metabolic rate and burns less calories. So when you start eating again you gain weight on less calories.
  4. Because a good deal of that 50 pounds lost will be things that you do not want to lose. Like your heart muscle for example. My best friend went on a medically supervised liquid fast in a hospital and died of a heart attack at age 19.
  5. well. it would be bad because, your skin would be extra saggy. & your immune system wont be as good..... i lost 90 pounds in a year once.. and ever since then my Immune system has NEVER been the same. i used to never, or hardly ever, get sick, and now every cold season I'm with the sniffles. i even get bronchitis from time to time; along with sinus infections. the doctor did tell me it was because of my fast weight loss.... also its just a huge shock to your body. its better if it happens gradually.
  6. because rapid weight loss results in a major loss of lean body mass.by reducing muscle mass there is no less biologically active tissue that burns calories. when the dieter returns to normal eating habits rapid weight gain occurs, many times to a higher body weight than previously. there is no easy way to lose a lot of weight. being physically fit and healthy is a lifestyle, not a short term endeavor.
  7. Well it depends. Naturally to lose 50 lbs really quick would deprive your body of nutrients and possibly damage your heart because it can't keep up. You could possibly go into cardiac arrest, just think of anorexia. By the doctors, it is safe but of course with tons of risks. Not only can you die on the table but I have heard of people dieing after surgery. Other things like blood clots have happened as well.
  8. No, it would mean a shock to your body. Your body wants to be balanced and changes should not happen too fast. Your body needs time to respond and adjust. Also, losing weight means your body has to neutralise a lot of toxins and waste so it would be too stressful. If you would lose weight too fast, your body would think that there is a food shortage and shut down the metabolism. This is stressful. Changes should be made gradually or you will have severe detox symptoms.
  9. It IS bad for your health. It is a terrible strain on your heart for one. To lose 50 pounds quickly, you are probably doing something that has ill health effects. But, it is also dangerous for your mind, our minds need fat to process information. To go completely without fat and lose that much weight, you will be starving your mind and depriving it of the nutrients that it needs to function properly. Anytime you are depriving your body of food, water, vitamins, or nutrients, you are not doing a good thing for your heart. Heart damage is not reversible, so before you do something for drastic weight loss, you should always consult your doctor. Losing weight quickly is usually not permanent weight loss. Yo-yo-ing is very hard on your heart. Please be careful and good luck with your weight loss.
  10. Quick weight loss does not take you through the changing your eating habits process for long term weight loss. Statistics show that people who lose weight fast will usually put it all back on and sometimes more within 12-18months. Also, fast weight loss can place the body into 'famine' shock which can interfere with the metabolism and how it works. Our body operates on 'feast or famine' principles. In time of plenty we eat gain weight to cover the times of famine when we use our own bady fat to compensate for the lack of food. YO-YO dieting has been shown to cause the metabolism to not know whether we are in times of feast or famine and so it slows down. To get it going again requires discipline and a regime of diet and exercise and it is this principle used on 'Biggest Loser'. Also there is much of what goes on behind the scenes in these shows we don't see or hear, so be carefull when taking their principles on board. The best way for us ordinary people to lose weight is to see our Doctor first instance to ensure we have no health issues and then see a Dietician, join a reputable long term weight loss group/class. This will give you other people to talk to share experiences etc. And have a workout mapped out for you by a Personal Trainer or Gym. Sometimes the quickest way to get to where you are going is the longest route. Good luck
  11. Your body is used to a certain weight and physiqe. If you gradually change your weight, your body will be able to adjust to those small changes. If you all of a sudden lose a lot of weight, your body might not be able to adjust to so much change.
